There are still a couple minor details left to touch up, but here’s a simple boat the curmudgeonly Captain Pete kept on hand for casual use. It has an outboard motor that’s finished but I’m reluctant to glue it in place because it might work better elsewhere. The lighthouse is in 1:24 (or half-inch) scale, and this is a 1:48 boat that will ultimately be paired with one of the peripatetic Pete’s quarter-scale homes.
A 1:24 boat is in the works and as you’ll see within the next week or two, it’s a more intricate kit than this one — this was a mix of resin, metal and laser-cut wood, and the larger boat is entirely wood. Painting and weathering these accessories was fun and there’s a scene I’ll eventually build with it, but there’s another skill I’ll need to practice first: painting resin figures.*
Some of my pop culture dioramas will require figures, as will a surprise planned for Crankenstein’s cabin, and it’s cheaper to paint your own if possible. If I can get the hang of it I’ll show Pete at different stages of his life, along with his dog, Matoto.
* There’s one accessory I’ve not yet finished: a fishing net. I’ll give it another shot tomorrow but its assembly required more dexterity than I could muster earlier.
